Carlo Ancelotti demands Bayern improvement

Carlo Ancelotti knows Bayern Munich must improve, despite the reigning Bundesliga champions kicking off the new season with a 3-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

Summer signings Niklas Sule and Corentin Tolisso got the Bavarians off to a flying start at the Allianz Arena, as they both scored inside the opening 19 minutes.

Robert Lewandowski then added a third for Bayern from the penalty spot before Admir Mehmedi struck a consolation for Leverkusen in what was a scrappy second half.

Ancelotti was pleased to kick off the new Bundesliga season with a victory, but he admits his side must improve over the coming weeks.

“It was a tough game,” Ancelotti said. “We scored early and then we did not defend well.

“We left too much space between the lines. This can happen in this phase. We have to improve. To keep a clean sheet, we must be more compact.”

New signing Sule, who netted the opener during Friday’s contest, also conceded that Bayern were not at their best and the 3-1 scoreline may have flattered them slightly.

“It was not easy and we had a hard time,” Sule added.

“In the first half we had good chances. The second half has not gone so well. The freshness was missing. There were plenty of chances. The size of the victory may be a bit too high.”

Bayern will face a stern test of their credentials over the next couple of weeks, as they have back-to-back away matches to come in the Bundesliga against Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim.

The Bavarians will also get their Champions League campaign underway early in September and they are priced at 26.00 to win Europe’s premier club competition this season.
